Carmel and Monterey
The above photograph is of part of the old route one from Los Angeles to San Francisco, about ten miles south of Monterey.   It gives you the full impression of the rugged nature of the attractive coastline which reminded us of many areas we have here in Scotland.  In particular the bridge was most impressive and if you look closely you will see a house built on the summit of the hill above the bridge.  This is certainly location, location, location!!
A view looking South on route one(top left), the 18th hole at Pebble Beach Golf Club (top right), Cyprus Point (below left) and the author wishing he had brought his golf clubs at PebbleBeach (below right)

Our party were most impressed with this area, especially as we were all keen golfers back in Scotland.   Pebble Beach is of course where the Bing Crosbie Classic Golf Tournament takes place.  There are many large houses in the Carmel area of the Peninsula, including the home of Doris Day but in spite of the author’s (who, along with many others throughout the World, has been an avid fan over the years) continual looking, searching and watching, no sign was seen of her establishment!   Just as well since, dear Doris, you deserves your privacy after a superb career in the many films .

We were nearing the end of our journey and after sampling a “fish and chip” meal at the Monterey Fisherman’s wharf, we headed back to San Francisco for a two night stay before our return journey to Scotland by United Airlines to Heathrow and thence by British Midland shuttle to Glasgow.

The weather in San Francisco  had been very poor for a few months and it had still not improved, so we didn’t see San Francisco in its best light.   But read on.........
